Alex Anderson

Visual Artist

Alex Anderson is an artist and an arts writer. Born in Lawrence, Kansas, he earned his B.A. in Art History from John Cabot University in Rome, taking a minor in Philosophy. His time abroad brought him into contact with countless historical masterpieces as well as much great contemporary art. To date, his own artworks have been compiled in several publications, and he has received various awards including 2016 “Best of Show” for his artwork in the “League for Innovation” competition while studying under Prof. Mark Cowardin.

For Alex, the study of art has become more than an occupation, it is a way of life. It molds the way in which he sees, thinks, and bonds with the world. His senior thesis, “The Use of Weight in Richard Serra’s Drawings and Sculptures: Some Historical Parallels,” sought to trace the concept of weight as the link between Serra’s drawings and sculptures, and examine the importance of weight throughout the history of art, relating Serra’s works to these traditions.

From 2015 until its closure, he has been a contributing writer for KCMETROPOLIS. His effort to create and search for works of high quality is never a hunt for treasure but instead a kind of pilgrimage—one that he aspires to share with everyone.

Born in Kansas, I earned my B.A. in Art History from John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, minoring in Philosophy. My time abroad brought me into contact with countless historical masterpieces as well as contemporary art and art criticism, the final catalyst for my decision to pursue visual art and criticism professionally. The study of art has become more than an occupation, it is a way of life. It molds the way in which I see, think, and bond with the world. My senior thesis, “The Use of Weight in Richard Serra’s Drawings and Sculptures: Some Historical Parallels,” sought to trace the concept of weight as the link between Serra’s drawings and sculptures, and examine the importance of weight throughout the history of art, relating Serra’s works to these traditions. From 2015 until its closure, I was contributing writer for KCMetropolis.Org. My effort to create and write about others’ works I see as a way of life that I hope inspires others. In fall of 2020 I completed a Master of Letters in Sculpture at The Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. I live in Arizona, creating work in response to the Sonoran landscape, and regularly show work with the STRATA Collective in Glasgow, Scotland. Currently, I am preparing for a solo show at Atelier Werkkunststudio in the fall of 2022.
